Headaches
A headache is one the body's most powerful alarm signals.It is often a sign of physical or psychological overload.
There are mant different types of headaches, and each is different according to how and when the pain occurs. These
include tension headaches,cluster headaches,simple headaches,combination headaches and migranes-which are especially
intense, often accompained by nausea and impaired vision. The pain of a headache can be triggered by many different things.
A very common cause of headache is tense muscles in the head or in the neck.
Headaches may also be a sign of stress,caffeine withdrawal,allergies,certain infectious diseases or the effect of too
much alcohol. Constricted or expanded blood vessels,and also altered pressure in the head (sometimes weather related),can
produce headaches as well.Natural methods-including massage,homeopathic remidies and relaxation excersises can sometimes
be as effective as standard medications in preventing or simply relieving the pain caused by different forms of headache.
If you suffer from frequent, severe headachesthat put you out of commission several times a month,it would be
advised to seek medical attention.Also if your headaches are associated with physical exertion,changes in vision, or weakness,
numbness, or paralysis of the limbs,do not attempt to self treat-see a doctor. If this does not help ask for a referral to a
headache specialist.
Do not overdo pain pills.Although occasional analgesic may help temporarily alleviate your headache. Taking these
drugs too often may worsen the pain.These drugs are ok taken in moderatin'but if you feel the need for more than two doses
a day, you should see a doctor.
Lying down, with eyes closed for 30 minutes to an hour or more, may be the best treatment for a bad headache.
Try not thinking of anything stressful, or think of pleasant and positive thoughts.
Types of Headaches
1.Simple headache- Hammering,buzzing,pulsing in the head.

2.Tension headache-Dull,oppressive pain occuring in the temples. Begins in back of head and neck or in the forehead and
spreads throughout the head.

3.Cluster headache-Piercing burning pain,which occurs on one side of the head and always in the same place.
Main cause is unknown.
4.Migrane headache-The pain is usually on one side of the head only. Often accompained by nausea,vomiting and vision problems.
Main causes are: Hereditary factors or circulatory disturbances in the brain.
5.Combination headache-Dull oppressive pain that usually begins in the morning and reoccurs between migrane attacks.
Main causes are unknown.
Headaches can be alleviated by using a cold compress,a bath,acupressure and relaxation techniques.Minimizing your exposure to
external stimuli,Exercise in fresh air.Quit smoking and do not use alcohol.
Creating a soothing environment free of external stimuli, such as light and noise.Close windows and blinds and use a fan to
ventilate and circulate the air around you.Do not let the fan blow directly on you.Unplug the phone and shut of the Television,
computer,radio and quiet any other source of noise.You can also use ear plugs or put cotton ball in your ears. Try to relax,with the
help of a relaxation technique such as yoga or meditating.
Acupressure can help also-using your thumb and index finger, gently press against the bridge of your nose and at the corners of
you eyes.You can also rub the fleshy webbing between your thumb and index finger.
A footbath diverts the blood supply from your head down to your feet.Soak or bathe your feet in a tub or basin of 95 degrees F water.
Add hot water every five minutes untill water reaches 115 degrees F. After soaking feet for about 5 minutes,pour in some cold water
slowly until the water temperature is luke warm.Then put on a pair of wool socks and lie down for at least 20 minutes.
You may also speak to a nutritionist or your doctor about taking herbal supplements to prevent headaches.It is believed that kava kava
can relieve tension headaches. Feverfew and gingo biloba are often useful and recommended to help prevent migranes.
Cold Compress--Moisten a washcloth with cold water,put 2 drops of peppermint oil on it and apply to the area of pain for about
15 minutes.
Potato poultice- Cut 2 large, unpeeled potatoes into quarters, boil untill tender.Mash the potatoes and press out excess moisture.
Wrap the warm potatoes in a cloth, and place in on the back of nech for 15 minutes.
Horseradish poultice--Add a small ammount of water to finely grated horseradish. Wrap into a cloth, apply to the neck for no longer
than 5 minutes.This will stimulate the skin,which will help torelieve headache pain.If you have sensitive skin spread a layer of cream
over your neck before applying the poultice.
For quick headache relief , put a few drops of fresh lemon juice into a cup of black coffee and sip small sips.(This is not for sensitive stomachs)
Also you can run a hot bath to alleviate tension and relax blood vessels.Mix in your hot bath water these essential oils with an
emulsifier ( cream of honey) 3 drops of chamomile, 3 drops of rosemary
